How to Fire Back at Toner Pirates

Toner pirates aren't the scourge of the seven seas, but they can make your company want to raise a white flag. Here's how to fire back at those villainous toner pirates before they board your ship!

What to Say to Toner Pirates

Toner pirates are savvy, sneaky, and, often, good at what they do. When they call you up pretending to be your provider or trying to pressure you into big purchases of bad toner, here's what you and your employees should say.

#1: "What is your address?"

When you ask this question, toner pirates know you're on to them--since, after all, you wouldn't ask this of a provider you trusted.

#2: "Can you send me an email confirming that quote?"

One thing to know about toner pirates is that they hate specifics and are even less enthusiastic about paper trails. Asking for confirmations or emails will send toner pirates packing.

#3: "Let me discuss this with the person who manages our supply orders."

Don't give the person's name--be vague. This tells toner pirates that you probably have print management and are comfortable, confident, and efficient in your organization and supply ordering processes.

#4: "What phone number can I reach you at?"

Toner pirates don't want to hear back from you, so asking for a phone number is a great way to get rid of them.

Reporting a Toner Pirate

If you've gotten a call from a toner pirate or have been the victim of a scam, there are a few ways you can report the incident.

Better Business Bureau

Contact the BBB to inform them of fraudulent dealings. Remember to report the business name if you can get it.

National Fraud Information Center

You can call or file a report online. The more details you provide, the easier it will be to help stop these crimes.

Attorney General's Office

This one is twofold: reach out to the Telemarketing Fraud Contact in both your state and the state where the toner pirate's call originated.

Although toner pirates are savvy, you have tools to fire back--like knowing what questions to ask and how to report a scam. Remember, though, sometimes the best offense is a good defense, and print management can help you dodge this and other risks.
